Electricity in Italy vs US and UK
In Italy, electrical devices operate on 220V – 230V and 50Hz. While the official standard is 220V, there is a ±10% tolerance, which means you may also see references to 230V or even 240V.
In comparison:
- USA & Canada: 120V and 60Hz
- UK: 230V and 50Hz
If you’re bringing electronic devices to Italy, check the input voltage range on the power adapter or device label. It must support 220V or 230V to function safely.
If your device only supports 120V, you will need a voltage converter to prevent damage.
It’s best to avoid bringing devices that require a special power converter—not only to protect your device and the venue’s electrical circuit but also to save space and reduce extra weight in your luggage.
Whenever possible, opt for dual-voltage devices. Check the details on your device’s specifications —see the picture for reference.
What kind of plug adaptor do I need to have for my electical devices
The Type C adapter (also called the Eu Plug) with two round pins to connect your UK plug.
Or you can get the universal travel adapter with an EU plug (type C) like the photo above
Remember when buying a travel plug adapter, that it is not a voltage converter! These little plugs let you connect American-style or UK-style plugs into oddly shaped Italian sockets.
When packing make sure your appliances have built-in 110/220-volt converters. If not, you’ll need to buy a voltage converter to use your appliances in Italy.
